Surgeon Simulator 2

SS2, the follow up to the classic Surgeon sim. It was very fun to see this title end up on my plate at Abstraction. It has probably been the most polished game that ever came to me, the art assets and levels were stunning. The game needed to be ported to Xbox and we faced the challenge of making a game that is designed for mouse and keyboard to a controller.

Hands on with the controller

Most games allow us to adapt controls with additional controls to make things easier with buttons, however for this game you are not holding a gun or opening menus a lot, no you are using your hands to cut open patients and remove organs and replace them with rubber duckies. We took quite some time to tweak the controls so you could beat records in levels by skill and not randomness.

New Team, no not us.

One of challenges did not come from the code for a chance, normally we pride ourselves in being in direct communication with the "other" team we use Slack or some other chat service and just ask the questions we need to ask directly. no need for boring emails or going through producers. This time around though we found ourselves knowing more about the game code then the other side and we quickly learned that quite a few people that developed the game had moved along to other studios. This meant we had to figure out some stuff all over again while someone probably already did before it was a challenge but we managed.
